Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month?

PreparednessWeb

According to Wikipedia, “Since its inception in 2004, National Preparedness Month is observed each September in the United States of America. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security, Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. FEMA’s Ready Campaign educates and empowers Americans to prepare for, and respond to emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.”

Did you know that only 57% of Americans surveyed report having supplies set aside in their homes just for disasters, and only 44% have a household emergency plan? {source: Citizen Corps National Survey -2009}

Both the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommend that individuals and businesses:

1. Get a Kit
2. Make a Plan
3. Be Informed

1. Get a Kit

It is extremely important to be prepared at your home or business for any type of emergency. Purchase a pre-made first aid kit from the American Red Cross store or put together your own. Most homes & businesses have a first aid kit, but you should consider other emergency supplies like a battery-operated or crank weather radio, food and water for each person for three days, medications and more. {Full list of what to put into your emergency kit}

2. Make a Plan

Discuss preparations with your family members or co-workers. Plan what to do in case you are separated in an emergency. Plan what to do if you have to evacuate. Don’t forget about your vital documents. Where are you storing your business documents? Be prepared ahead of time so that your business can continue operating immediately following a disaster.

3. Be Informed

Do the research! Know how your community broadcasts emergency weather information. Look at the Ready.gov website to prepare your family and Ready.gov/Business to prepare your business. Check how you are doing with the American Red Cross Ready Rating Program (for businesses, organizations and schools). Don’t wait until it is too late!
