When decorating for Christmas, simplicity is the key. Focus on the meaning of the holiday, rather than the commercialism. Select a color scheme – up to three colors – and stick with it! If you’ve got a large collection of light up buildings, try choosing a few of your favorites and showcase them in an extra-special way, rather than overwhelming everyone with a giant light up city.

When you finish decorating, take time to donate all of the unused items to charity. This will free up space for that new item or two you pick up this holiday season. If it’s in your Christmas decorations box and you haven’t used it for 2 prior years, get rid of it! Choose quality over quantity.

When it’s time to store away all of the decorations, take time to purge a few extra items. Is the item worn out or not particularly appealing anymore? Is it energy efficient? Does it fit your theme? Do you love it? Does it serve a purpose? If not, toss it or donate it! To keep your holiday decorations organized until next year, use red or green bins. Most stores now offer bins in colors for each holiday. That way, you can immediately tell which holiday items are stored in the bin when you look into the attic/garage/shed.
