From the annual Christmas card photo to capturing the joy of a family gathering, a little bit of planning can make a huge difference in your holiday photos.

Mark your calendar for September or October of NEXT year right now. Pick a date and put “Christmas card photo planning” on it. When that date rolls around, take a few minutes to plan your Christmas card photos.

  • Are you going to wear coordinated outfits, using a color scheme or style to unify the look?
  • Do you need to book an appointment with a professional or use a tripod?
  • Indoor or outdoor?
  • What time of day is best to ensure good attitudes from all involved?
  • What time of day has the best lighting?
  • Browse the internet (or Pinterest) for some fun photo poses.
  • Think about the small things – haircuts, accessories, clean shoes, etc.
  • Book your appointments early!

Don’t wait until December 15th to decide to take the photo and then stress because it’s so last minute you won’t be able to get the perfect shot. Stressed out families don’t take good Christmas photos!

Take a few minutes ahead of time to think about what photos would best represent your holiday gathering. Do you always eat a certain food? Do you want to take at least one photo of each member of the family? Do the kids wear special Christmas pajamas? Whatever traditions your family has, be sure to capture them this year. Make a small list of moments that you’d like to capture and keep them in your notes app or camera bag, so you’ll be prompted throughout the holidays.

Whatever you do, capture those memories for the years to come!
