Are you prepared?
When that unexpected, sometimes tragic, always sad time comes… death. We don’t like to talk about it but we have to. Here are some helpful tips to manage the stuff (physical and digital) that you leave behind, making that time easier for your loved ones:
- Prepare an “In Case of Emergency” file and inform a family member or friend of where it’s located. This file should include all legal documentation of your estate, banking information, insurance policies, and any other personal information that will help your “person” carry out your wishes.
- Don’t forget about your online accounts and passwords, including social media. Websites like Facebook are becoming more aware of the digital afterlife issue and are allowing you to designate someone to take over your account after you pass.
- Keep a copy of all photos on an external hard drive (even those stored online with Shutterfly or Snapfish) and keep track of passwords for those accounts also.
- Printed photos and family documents can be scanned and given to family members prior to passing.
- Don’t hold onto furniture or collectibles just because you think family members want them. This generation is not holding onto or collecting things like past generations did. Talk to your family, ask if they want it, if not let it go.
