How to Let Go of Things You Feel Guilty Getting Rid Of

,

One of the hardest parts of decluttering isn’t deciding what you need. It’s deciding what to do with the things you feel like you should keep.

Maybe it was an expensive purchase; someone special gave it to you; or it reminds you of an important time in your life. Or maybe you simply feel guilty getting rid of something that still has value.

These feelings are completely normal. But keeping something out of guilt doesn’t honor the item, the person who gave it to you, or the money you spent on it. Sometimes, letting go can actually make room for the things that matter most.

“But I Spent a Lot of Money on It.”

This is a tough category to let go of.

When you spend a significant amount of money on something, it can feel wasteful to get rid of it, even if you no longer use it. But the money is already spent. Keeping something you don’t use doesn’t recover that money. It simply takes up space (mentally and physically).

Instead of focusing on what you spent on it, try asking:

“Is it worth the space it takes up in my life?”

If the answer is no, consider whether selling, donating, or giving it to someone who will use it could be a better way to give that item a new purpose.

“Someone Gave This to Me.”

Gifts can carry a lot of emotional weight.

You may feel that getting rid of a gift means you don’t appreciate the person who gave it to you. But a gift is given to be enjoyed, not to create a lifelong obligation.

The thought behind the gift has already been received and its purpose has been served. You can appreciate the person, the occasion, and the generosity behind the gift without keeping the physical object forever.

“This Means Too Much to Me.”

Sentimental items are often the hardest things to declutter because you’re not really deciding whether to keep an object. You’re using the object as a touchstone to a piece of your life.

Start by asking yourself what you actually want to remember. Is it the item itself, or is it the person, place, experience, or feeling connected to it?

Sometimes you may discover that you don’t need to keep everything to preserve the memory. A few meaningful pieces can represent an entire chapter of your life.

If an item brings happy memories but no longer serves a purpose in your life, you might take a photo of it before letting it go. The memory doesn’t have to leave just because the object does.

And if something truly is important to you, keep it! Decluttering isn’t about getting rid of everything that isn’t practical. It’s about making intentional choices about what deserves space in your home and your life.

Give Yourself Permission to Let Go

There is no perfect formula for deciding what stays and what goes.

Try asking yourself:

  • Do I use or enjoy this?
  • Would I choose to bring this into my home today?
  • Am I keeping it because I want it or because I feel guilty?
  • Does the item represent a memory that I can preserve another way?
  • Could someone else get more use or enjoyment from it?
  • Is keeping it worth the physical and mental space it takes up?

Most importantly, remember that you are allowed to change your mind about something you once loved, needed, purchased, or received as a gift.

Your home doesn’t have to be a storage place for every part of your past. Letting go isn’t about forgetting. It’s about making room for the life you’re living now.
