For many, the closet is the place you cram stuff, especially when company is coming, and it often just stays there.

In this Local 7 Lifestyles video, Amy discusses tips and methods to organize your bedroom closet.

Get everything out of the closet that doesn’t belong

If you have papers, memorabilia, bags, tools, or anything else in your wardrobe that isn’t clothes, get it out. A small safe or bin of memorabilia is fine to stay, but get everything else out that doesn’t belong in the closet.

Sort through your clothes

Go through each article of clothing and ask yourself these questions:

  • Does it fit me anymore?
  • Is it stained or ripped?
  • Is it functional?
  • Do I like it and will I use it?

Don’t forget about the 80/20 rule: We wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. You have certain go-to items that you’re going to go to all the time. From the rest of them, pair down and get rid of the stuff you don’t want. If you need additional help managing the amount of clothes you have, check out these 3 easy tips.

Put like items together

Create a section for dresses, long-sleeve shirts, short-sleeve shirts, sportswear, etc. If you like your items in color order, separate them by color and then type of clothing. Keep your clothes in your closet organized by having a system—whether that’s by color, sleeve length, or having all winter on top and summer on the bottom—whatever it is that you decide, have a system and understand that system.

Hanging vs. folding

Fold items like t-shirts, leggings, jeans, and shorts and place them in a drawer. Hang your dresses, pants, and skirts. If you have nicer t-shirts that you don’t want to get wrinkled, hang those too!

Lesser used items

If you have items like ski gear or other kinds of sporting goods that you may not wear very often, put them in a little bin, label it, and put it up high on a shelf. We love using these clear storage boxes from The Container Store for this job, so you can see what's in each bin quickly and easily.
