When your kids are going back to school, the main thing you want to start thinking about is creating positive habits and routines for your household!

Back-to-school tips

Here are some tips to make the back-to-school rush a little less stressful and a little easier:

  • Start getting the kids to bed at a decent hour and up at a decent hour. Transitioning from summer hours to school hours can be difficult. Sending the kids to bed at the same time every night is also key!
  • Get the bedroom decluttered and organized. If a child wakes up in the morning to clutter, they're less likely to be organized throughout their day.
  • Set up a study space, maybe in their room or the dining room. Make sure it can be quiet.
  • Put together a little caddy—like a little bathroom caddy—that has extra school supplies in it, so they can tote it with them no matter where they choose to do their homework.
  • For older kids, try color coding school binders. Get a 1.5 to 2 inch binder. Then, get colored folders for each subject. Designate one color for every class or for every subject. For example: green is history, blue is math, etc. They can then tuck their homework assignments into each folder according to the color.

Family calendars help everyone stay on the same page

  • If your kids are young, you can place one on the wall somewhere everyone can see it.
  • For older kids that have phones, you can use a calendar that syncs to everyone’s device.
  • Each person in the family has a color for the appointments they have.
  • Then, they can see they have a ballgame at 6pm on Tuesday, and they can be prepared.

Building good habits & routines (and then following through with them!) will bring peace and calmness to the busy school-aged children in your household!
