How do I keep stacks of sweaters from falling over?

How do you organize sweaters? One of our readers asked a question about that topic!
Q: I wanted to know if you had a tip for stacking sweaters so they all don't fall off the shelf when I try to get one out of the stack.  Also, if you could suggest how to be able to the see the sweater instead of digging for it in the closet.
A: Thanks for asking how to organize sweaters! I've had this exact problem in my own closet - for both sweaters and sweatshirts. Here are some ideas to help you organize sweaters:
  • Install another shelf (or shelves) so you are only stacking the sweaters 4 high or so. If you use a cube system (like Cubeicals from Target or Amazon), you can separate the stacks with shelves and dividers in between. In this example, we put t-shirts in some cubes and sweaters/sweatshirts in other cubes. We organized the t-shirts by type and/or frequency of use.
  • Utilize shelf dividers - they make dividers that go onto a shelf that keep stacks of sweaters/t-shirts from falling side to side. Here are a couple of choices you could purchase from Amazon. Make sure they work on your shelving - either wood or wire - before purchasing.
  • Put a bin on the shelf with the top facing out. Again, this will provide a barrier to the sides of the sweater stack to prevent them from falling over.
  • Hang as many sweaters as possible. Only hang sweaters that will not be stretched out of shape by the hanger. Thin or fragile sweaters should be folded and placed on a shelf.
  • If the sweaters are folded (like a t-shirt) and stacked on a shelf, you should be able to see the color/design of each sweater. Just don't stack it too high or the stacks will tend to fall over.
