Ah, autumn—the season of cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, and, of course, adorable fall decor! But when it’s time to pack up your pumpkins and say goodbye to your leafy garlands, things can get a little messy. If organizing and storing your fall decorations has you wanting to hide under a pile of faux leaves, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here are some fun and easy tips to help you store your autumn decor without losing your autumn spirit... or will to decorate!

1. Sort Like a Squirrel Stashing Nuts

First, gather all your fall goodies and sort them into piles. Pumpkins in one pile, wreaths in another, and those adorable scarecrows in a third. This is also the perfect time to say goodbye to any broken or outdated items. (I’m looking at you, frayed plaid ribbon from 2005.) Don't be afraid to make room for new items.

2. Get Yourself Some Leafy Storage Bins

Your fall decor deserves better than those old, flimsy boxes! Invest in some sturdy, clear storage bins so you can easily see what’s inside. Even better, go for bins in autumn colors—orange, brown, and red—to keep things organized and festive, this also helps just incase you are unable to see or read your labels!

3. Protect Your Pumpkins (and Other Fragile Stuff)

If you’ve got delicate decorations like ceramic pumpkins or glass acorns, be sure to give them some extra love. Wrap them in bubble wrap, tissue paper, or even an old scarf (it’s autumn, after all!). You don’t want to open up a box of broken bits next fall. You can even reuse all those plastic bags you keep from the grocery store.

4. Untangle Those Twinkle Lights

If you use string lights in your fall decor, you know they can be a tangled mess when it’s time to pack them away. Wrap them around a piece of cardboard or use a storage reel to keep them neat. No one wants to spend their first crisp autumn day untangling lights!

5. Maximize Your Cozy Corners

Running out of storage space? Think like an autumn decorator ninja and use every bit of room you have! Under-the-bed storage, hanging organizers, and stackable bins are your best friends. The goal is to keep everything tidy without it looking like a tornado swept through your storage area. Plastic or metal shelving can help stack totes or boxes that might be too heavy to hold weight.

6. Keep It Cool and Dry

To keep your decorations looking fresh, store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp basements or scorching hot attics—those are not your fall decor’s friends. A closet or a spare room shelf is ideal for keeping everything in good shape until next year. If you have no choice but to store in one of these areas, we definitely suggest the use of plastic totes or bins.

7. Make a Quick Inventory

Okay, I know this sounds like overkill, but hear me out—a simple inventory list can save you so much time next year. Just jot down what you have and where you’ve stored it. You’ll be grateful when you’re not tearing through boxes looking for that one perfect wreath. You can also make a small list on a label so you don't have to dig through each box to find what you're looking for. You can also coordinate your list to labels on your boxes so you know exactly what box to go for when needed.

8. Plan for Easy Access Next Year

When you’re packing up, think ahead. Store your favorite items at the front so you can easily grab them when it’s time to decorate again. This way, you’re not digging through bins of scarecrows just to find your favorite pumpkin centerpiece.

Wrapping Up the Season

Organizing and storing your autumn decor doesn’t have to be a chore if you just start now with a little extra work and a little planning and some clever tricks, you can make the process easy and stress-free. And by getting everything in order now, you’ll be ready to jump into fall festivities next year without all the fuss. Here’s to a clutter-free, cozy autumn season ahead!
