Garage sale season is upon us.  It is a great way to get rid of unwanted items, clear some space, and make some money in the process.   If you think you can't do it, you're wrong. Here are some great tips on how to have a successful garage sale.

1. Gather Items

First of all, and most importantly, is gathering items for your garage sale.  Look everywhere for items to sell: garage (duh), basement, attic, kitchen cupboards, etc.  This can be done year-round or even just a week or two before the garage sale.  One way most people determine if they can get rid of something is to ask themselves - Have I used it in the last year?, Do I love it?, What's the worst thing that could happen if I get rid of it?  Other people use the 20% rule, for example, 20% of books must go or 20% of shoes must go.  Also, enlist the kids to help.  Let them have the money for toys and books that they are willing to get rid of.

2. Advertising

Another important task in having a successful garage sale is advertising.  These days, social media and Craigslist is probably your best bet.  But don't forget to make some yard signs too.  Many faithful "garage sale-rs" driving around on a Friday or Saturday will definitely stop when they see your signs.

3. Garage Sale Day

On the day of the garage sale, Make sure you have plenty of change and bags.  Also, put a price on everything.  It takes more time up front, but makes for an easier time during the garage sale.  Like items should be displayed together.  Think of it like the departments at your local Target store - clothing, books, house wares, etc.

4. After the Sale

Lastly, when your garage sale is over, take the unsold items to your local Goodwill store or other non-profit agency.  You have already decided that you didn't need the items, so do not bring them back into your newly de-cluttered home. If this still seems to overwhelming for you, give us a call at 812-858-2457.  We would love to help you with your garage sale.
